7th April
On Tuesday I had phoned BW and booked to go down the Montgomery Canal on Thursday and that the lock keeper, would be there between 12. & 2 p.m to let us down ( You have to book in advance) We only had to cruise four miles and two locks to get to the top of the Montgomery Canal. The plan being to moor there until tomorrow (Thursday). We set off at 9 00 a.m. and got to the top of the Montgomery at 11.00 a.m. As we were expecting to be there waiting for 24 hours we got the chairs out in the sun, coffee and biscuits etc. The lock keeper arrived and came over to us to ask, if we were going down the locks? Yes we said, but not until tomorrow, but would it be possible for us to go down today? "No", he said, "you can only go down on the day you have booked". It was getting a little chilly so Carolann invited us in Autumn Years for a drink, well it would have been rude to refuse! An hour latter we returned to Acen to get lunch ready, I was outside, when the lock keeper came over to me to query our booking, saying "according to his sheet we were due to go down today", "no" I said Thursday, "yes" he said, its Thursday today!!!! and yes we can go today. A big rush and we were in the lock and descending the locks and off cruising the beautiful Montgomery. How we had two Wednesday or was it Tuesday we don't know!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We moored up at Queens Head for the night. 8 miles, 7 locks, 4 hours. On this day in 1827 matches were first sold by the inventor John Walker.
