Couldn't post the blog on Wednesday poor / no phone signal.
Wednesday, our trip to York, due at 5.30 p.m. through the Selby Lock.
We spent our time doing final preparation on the boats,
after we had moved through the swing bridge before the lock, deweeding the prop, filling with water and getting safety gear out for tidal sailing. The girls did their final shopping, for vital gear of shoes and clothes.
After frequent visits to watch the torrent of water rising and all the flotsam and jetsam speeding up the river, the due time arrived. There were five boats due to go out, we were the first to go out and moved in on time, we descended this very deep lock, the gates opened then we waited for the lock keeper to signal that it was safe to proceed, into the river into a clear bit of water.
He gave us the OK at 5.50 p.m. and off we shot, immediately being pushed around with the urgent flow of the tide.
I had the satnav set on the roof, that told us that we were traveling at just over 8 miles p.h. Keeping the engine revs. at just under 2000 rpm. we were overtaking the rubbish in the water and having to go through the correct bridge arches
and go around some acute bends. It's not a very pretty river at this point, it's a dirty wide ditch, after about five miles the tide was making very little difference to our speed, our speed was now down to normal cruising speed of about 4 mph. We arrived at Naburn locks just after 8 p.m. and 13 miles.
We were joined by the two boats that came after us and we all ascended together and moored up just after the locks.
13 miles, 2 locks.
